Griesheim has been a district or Stadtteil of Frankfurt am Main, Germany since 1928, the year of its suburbanisation. It is located between Nied, Sossenheim, Bockenheim, Gallusviertel and Schwanheim. 150px-Mk_Frankfurt_Karte_GriesheimAlthough it is located close to downtown Frankfurt (5-10 minutes by train), Griesheim also has an atmosphere of a smaller village.  Not far from the centre, which is located in southern Griesheim, are the banks of the River Main, which is very popular with cyclists, joggers and pedestrians.

It is well connected with the city centre through the street cars S1 and S2 as well as with the more western areas and Wiesbaden because of it's train station.

The southern part of Griesheim hauses the "Ortszentrum", which can be translated as the local centre, There is a plethora of shopping, doctors and restaurants. Griesheim centre is shaped by 1960 and 1970-ties settlements. The northern part of the area was constructed in the 1950-ties. The hauses back then were mostly inhabited by asylum seekers. These are now being extensively renovated.

There is quite some commercial activity in the area. There is the chemical industry in the west and there is a big concentration of car dealers, large retailers, a cinema and a disco at the Mainzer strasse.  The industrial concern Messer Griesheim was the designer for the olympic fire in Sydney. The Deutsche Bundesbahn also has a service station here for some of its ICE locomotives.

Griesheim social notes

Griesheim was considered a social troublespot for a very long time. This came to be because of major  problems in certain housing estates (akin to UK's council estates), especially around the western Ahornstrasse.

The 1990-ties brought troubles that led to the term "Frankfurt Bronx" being coined for the area. The locals however rebound in the later years and launched several initiatives that avoided the formation of american style ghettos.

Considering this, some feel that the stigmatization of the area is no longer applicable. This is not to say that there still are parts of Griesheim that require further measures. To ensure their development, Griesheim-Nord became part of the Social City project. The idea is to enhance the districts integration into the city through this framework and a system called "quarters management".

There are 3 public youth clubs / workshops:

  • International States Youthclub
  • Club for Social works for youngsters
  • Children and Youth bureau of the church community.

There are also many other social and sports clubs in the area. The church community also regularly organizes musical events.
