Linking migration and urban and regional development is necessary to understand the rationale, dynamics and direction of migration flows, including their reversals, as well as their impact on cities and regions.

This special issue of European Urban and Regional Studies collects papers first presented at the journal’s workshop on Uneven Regional Development, Polarization in Cities and International Circuits of Migration held in London in April 2008. The workshop aimed to explore relationships between migration and uneven development; to consider how and in what ways migration affects polarization within cities and impacts on regional inequality; and more generally to examine how migration relates to the European competitiveness and cohesion agenda.ass), ethnicity and gender.
